Welcome to South Middle School Orchestra!

Students should have the following supplies for orchestra:
  • Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for 6th grade, Book 2 for 7th and 8th grade
  • Instrument, bow, and case
  • Rosin
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Pencil
  • Rockstop for cellos
  • Shoulder rest for violins/violas
Optional: Extra set of strings, Folding music stand (These are nice for home practice.)

Grading in orchestra is based on Participation, Practice, and Performance.

Participation: Students are expected to bring their instrument, orchestra folder(provided), music book, pencil, and planner to orchestra every day and show their best effort.

Practice: Frequent practice is necessary for success! Violins and violas should be taken home daily. Find a good place to practice at home, and set up a weekly routine. It is better to practice in small 15-20 minute sessions every day than it is to practice for a large 2 hour session on one day. Start with a scale to warm up, move on to music that needs work, then finish with a favorite song.

Performance: In addition to regular playing tests, we have three required evening concerts, one required evening rehearsal, and a solo contest. Concert dress includes a black orchestra shirt (purchased at school), black pants or black skirt, black socks, and black shoes.
