 Once prized by kings and princes........
Peregrine falcons were decimated by the use of DDT following World War II. The chemical was banned in 1972. The last known Wisconsin peregrine falcons nested and fledged young in 1964. In 1987 peregrines were reintroduced to Wisconsin through the efforts of generous Wisconsin citizens supporting the Endangered Resources program.
Peregrine falcons can live up to 15 years. In the spring the males perform dramatic aerobatics and sing "wichew - whichew" courtship song. Unlike most birds, peregrines nest on a simple scrape made on a ledge or cliff sheltered from the weather. They tend to return to the same site every year. They lay three to five eggs, and the young hatch in about 33 days. The young are particularly vulnerable to predators until they are about a month-and-half old.
Peregrines often hunt at dawn and dusk. They fly high above their prey, usually small birds, swoop down and strike, catching their prey in mid-air.
