Quiet Reading Guidelines
-
All staff members are expected to consistently follow these guidelines.
-
The room should be quiet during reading break.
-
Everyone is expected to read recreational print material during this time. Teachers should model for students.
-
No passes will be issued during reading time.
-
Attendance will be taken electronically or written (for those in a room without a computer).
-
Students that do not bring materials should be referred to Gay Lynn for help with materials selection. It is a good idea to keep some magazines and short stories in your room for students who occasionally forget materials.
-
Periodically, the adult can read to the students for variety, but students should be encouraged to read independently the majority of the time.
-
Gay Lynn will provide a suggested read aloud list to each grade; any selections you want to read that are not on the list should be reviewed with Gay Lynn.

Why do we read?
Research shows that teens who read:
-
generally do better in school because they read better, write better, concentrate better
-
expand their vocabulary and have easier time processing new information
-
have many interests and do well in a wide variety of subjects
-
develop an ability to understand how other people think and feel
-
acquire the ability to sift information and to understand how unrelated facts can fit into a whole
-
tend to be more flexible in their thinking and more open to new ideas
-
weather personal problems better without their schoolwork being affected
Other benefits:
-
Increases library circulation
-
Improves attitudes toward reading
-
Perfect chance for students and staff to read and relax for pleasure
